Customer Reviews
To all possible buyers looking at purchasing this scope, I hope to give you as much information as I can to help you decide whether or not to go with this product. I am an avid target shooter with 10 years of experience using everything from civil war revolvers to compound-crossbows. While I personally love iron sights, I acknowledge that past 100 yards a scope can be quite a blessing. I have now used this scope on my own Mosin Nagant m91/30 rifle several times and now have enough experience with this product to provide a detailed evaluation.
For those looking to get right to the point, I think this product is excellent for the price. The scope is an excellent deal, but the mount definitely leaves a lot to be desired. If you are looking at this review I will assume you have done the necessary research and understand the concept of "scout-style" and the importance of an extended eye relief scope. I can say that the scope I got with this product had an excellent eye relief for my Mosin and worked exactly as desired. I will evaluate this product in more detail below in 2 sections. 1: The scope itself. 2: The scope mounting accessories.
1: The scope provides a very clear and sharp image. My most recent use of the scope included ranges in excess of 150 yards and the scope performed admirably. I feel that the scope itself is the better part of the deal, as comparable scopes I found cost in the range of 80 dollars. For its magnification, this was the lowest priced EER scope I could find. I only have 3 minor complaints with the scope. 1, The scope reticule is a duplex, thus it does not have mil-dots which would make using Kentucky-Windage a bit easier. 2, The zoom adjustment does not quite have a free and smooth feel to it. I sometimes have to turn with a little more force than I would like. I advise being fairly gentle with it and the scope as a whole to be on the safe side. 3, when at its minimal 2x zoom, the front sight post on your Mosin Barrel can be seen and may partially obstruct your field of view in the scope, but past 4x this issue disappears. On the basis of the scope alone I highly recommend this product. The scope is not perfect, nor is it particularly resilient to rough treatment; but for a low cost, highly effective sight with the proper eye relief, it is an excellent way to outfit your Mosin for use at long range.
2: While the scope is excellent for the price, I unfortunately cannot say the same for the mount. First off, I definitely recommend not using the provided scope rings. Mine were poorly made and needed significant work in order to make a tight fit on the mounting rail. As for the rail, unfortunately the best aspects of the Mosin make it inherently difficult to mount a scope to it. The mount provided with this package is designed to replace the leaf of the rear sight. My mount fit perfectly in the rear sight mount, but this method has some fundamental issues. The Mosin is a relatively high recoil rifle, which means that a solid scope mount system is essential. The mount rail provided, however, is only attached by putting shear force on two small screws that are only about 1/16 inch in diameter. After only about 15 shots, my scope had a significant amount of wobble to it. Certainly enough to make the scope highly inaccurate. If you try to tighten the mount adequately, you will shear the screws clean off. Fortunately, there is an alternative. The advantage to the scout style mount is that you don't have to pay a gunsmith to drill and tap your receiver. The good thing is there is another way to mount this scope scout style without using the provided mount. The rear sight of the Mosin can be entirely removed. Underneath the rear sight is a 3/8 dovetail mount rail. If you remove the drift pins holding the sight in place, you can simply slide the sight forward off of the dovetail. This will allow you access to a secure mounting rail welded to the barrel that you can then buy scope rings to attach to. This will give you an excellent place to mount your scope that will be solid and only requires amateur level gunsmithing with only a couple tools. Sometimes the rear sight will have been soldered into place, but this can be overcome by hammering or torch. I recommend you watch the many instructional videos available online for more detailed information before attempting this method, as there are hard to notice set screws and other complications that may arise.
My goal was to have a cheap, long distance rifle. If you are trying to find a cheap way to outfit your Mosin for long distance shooting, I don't think you will find a better deal than this product. With 3 hours of searching, I certainly couldn't. I hope this review was helpful to you, and wish you luck with your project. Aim for the stars and have fun.
I received my mosin nagant scope(2-7x32 LER)after only 9 days (not bad considering it was shipped from N.J.to Alberta). The actual mounting with the supplied mount rail only took about a half an hour. The shoot in looks as though it should only take 4 or 5 rounds to zero plus 1.8"for range.I highly recommend this set-up as a cost efficient and easy"no special tools" approach.
Thanks,Global Sportsman.
